OPENING HYMN

Hymn 127, Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God, you see that we have no power to defend ourselves. Guard and keep us both outwardly and inwardly from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.  Amen.

FIRST LESSON

Jeremiah 26:8-15 (printed on back of worship folder)

Jeremiah, a prophet of God, faced persecution because of the message God told him to proclaim. Yet, Jeremiah faithfully spoke the truth. He proclaimed God’s judgment on those who rejected his message and announced God’s love and forgiveness to all who in faith obeyed.

PSALM OF THE DAY

Psalm 42-43 (also found on page 82 of the hymnal)

SECOND LESSON

Philippians 3:17–4:1(printed on back of worship folder)

St. Paul explains that many people continue to resist their Savior and their salvation. He then encourages us to stand firm in the Lord since we know that our citizenship is in heaven with our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

GOSPEL

Luke 13:31-35 (printed on back of worship folder)

Just as the Jews rejected and killed the prophets sent by God and refused their message of salvation, so Jesus is also rejected and would soon be killed. However, through his rejection and sacrifice, we enjoy the gift of salvation.
