Sunday Worship at 8:00am & 10:30am, Spiritual Growth Hour at 9:15am

January 28, 2018                                                            Epiphany 4

Welcome to all worshipers of Jesus! God’s Word is powerful. Christ, as our prophet, brings us God’s truth. Christ’s love leads us to speak and use that truth lovingly.

Order of Service

Service of Word and Sacrament, page 26 in the front of the hymnal

Opening Hymn

Songs of Thankfulness and Praise, #82

Prayer of the Day

Lord God, you know that we are surrounded by many dangers and that we often stumble and fall. Strengthen us in body and mind, and bring us safely through all temptations; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen (sung)

First Lesson

Deuteronomy 18:15-20

Moses gives the promise of another Prophet who will be like Moses, yet greater.

Psalm of the Day

Psalm 1, page 64 in front of the hymnal

Second Lesson

1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Our Lord wants us to be careful in our Christian freedom so that we do not offend the weak. The use of meat sacrificed to idols is something neither commanded nor forbidden by God. In matters of concern today, we remember not to wound weak consciences merely to show that something is permissible.

Gospel Lesson

Mark 1:21-28

This lesson shows us the Prophet spoken of by Moses in today’s Old Testament reading. Jesus teaches with divine authority, and then he demonstrates it by driving our evil spirits. Jesus reveals himself and his glory.

Hymn of the Day

Rise, Shine, You People, #556

Sermon

Deuteronomy 18:15-20—There's No Prophet Like Jesus

Hymn
