December 10, 2017                                                             Advent 2

Welcome to all worshipers of Jesus! John the Baptist prepared the way for Christ by preaching repentance. We also prepare our hearts as we wait for Christ to return.

Order of Service

Service of the Word, page 38 in the front of the hymnal

Opening Hymn

Arise, O Christian People, #14

Prayer of the Day

Stir up our hearts, O Lord, to prepare the way for your only Son. By his coming give us strength in our conflicts and shed light on our path through the darkness of this world; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen (sung)

First Lesson

Isaiah 40:1-11

God wants his people comforted. He calls Isaiah to cry out with the message: “All men are like grass...but the Word of our God stands forever.” This message exposes human weakness and comforts broken sinners with God's strength.

Psalm of the Day

Psalm 85, page 97 in front of the hymnal

Second Lesson

2 Peter 3:8-14

Peter describes the Lord's patience, his desire for man's repentance, and his sudden return. We do not fear his return, “we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth,” and we shape our lives to fit into the pattern of that promise.

Gospel Lesson

Mark 1:1-8

John's rough garments and rough lifestyle were in line with his rough message. He was the second Elijah, sent to fill the ditches of despair and level the mountains of pride to make a smooth highway for the King to enter human hearts.

Hymn of the Day
