 February 26, 2017                                                   Transfiguration

Welcome to all worshipers of Jesus! As the season of Epiphany closes, we see the humble Servant of God transfigured in glory for our blessing. As he prepares to go to the cross in deepest humility, we catch a glimpse of the one and only Son, as hear the Father’s approval.

Opening Hymn

Jesus, Take Us to the Mountain, #712

Prayer of the Day

Lord God, before the suffering and death of your one and only Son, you revealed his glory on the holy mountain. Grant that we who bear his cross on earth may behold by faith the light of his heavenly glory and so be changed into his likeness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen (sung)

First Lesson

Exodus 24:12,15-18

When Israel camped at the foot of Mount Sinai during the exodus from Egypt, the Lord summoned Moses up the mount to receive the tables of the law. Moses went up to the glory of God that had settled on the mount. Years later Moses appeared in witness to the Son’s glory on the Mount of Transfiuration.

Psalm of the Day

Psalm 148, Page 121 in the front part of the hymnal

Second Lesson

2 Peter 1:16-21

Peter recounts the transfiguration of Jesus he witnessed on the mountaintop. Then the Word made flesh was revealed in his glory; now the Word given through the holy writers attests to his glory that we may believe that Jesus is the Son of God, our Savior.

Gospel Lesson

Matthew 17:1-9

As Jesus prepares to go to Jerusalem to offer up his life for the world, he is transfigured in glory before Peter, James, and John on the mountaintop. Moses and Elijah flank the Lord and attest to his glory while the Father speaks words of loving approval of his Son.
