Order of Service

Opening Hymn

May We Your Precepts, Lord Fulfill, #458

Prayer of the Day

Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the Word of life for our eyes to see and our ears to hear. Help us believe what the Scriptures proclaim about him and do the things that are pleasing in your sight; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen (sung)

First Lesson

Isaiah 58:5-9a

God prescribed Israel’s ritual worship, including fasting. But such things were never to be considered godly simply by virtue of their performance. The Lord looks beyond the ritual to the heart. The worship of God extends beyond the formalities of ritual worship to include the entire life of the believer.

Psalm of the Day

Psalm 111, Page 106 in the front part of the hymnal

Second Lesson

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

Paul reminds the Corinthians of his preaching and teaching among them. His preaching centered on the crucified Christ, not on the promotion of self. True Christian preaching is always to be a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, not the wisdom of man.

Gospel Lesson

Matthew 5:13-20

Jesus calls his believers light, salt, and a city set on a hill. He calls on Christians to let their lives shine and so glorify God in this sin-darkened world. Jesus came to fulfill the law in our place, providing a “righteousness that surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees.”
