Almighty God, you sent your Son to proclaim your kingdom and to teach with authority. Anoint us with the power of your Spirit that we, too, may bring good news to the afflicted, bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty to the captive; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

First Lesson

Isaiah 9:1-4

Isaiah prophesies that light will dawn in Galilee of the Gentiles for the comfort of those spiritually downtrodden and oppressed.

Second Lesson

1 Corinthians 1:10-17

Paul exhorts the Corinthians to true unity on the basis of the pure gospel. He urges them to put away the divisions that were threatening to split the congregation according to loyalties to various leaders.

Gospel Lesson

Matthew 4:12-23

After John the Baptist had been imprisoned, Jesus began his great Galilean ministry, preaching a message of repentance and faith in fulfillment of the prophet’s words that in obscure Galilee a light would dawn. As he begins to preach, Jesus calls his first disciples: Peter, Andrew, James and John.
