Opening Hymn- Chief of Sinners Though I Be, #385

Prayer of the Day: Mercifully grant, O God, that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts, for without your help we are unable to please you; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen (sung)

First Lesson- Ezekiel 18:1-4,25-32

God judges everyone justly. “The soul who sins is the one who will die.” No one will be condemned for another's disobedience. Nor will any be saved by another's faith inspired obedience. Yesterday's obedience cannot offset today's disobedience. The Lord's will is that his people repent of their sins, turn to him, and be saved.

Psalm of the Day- Psalm 25, page 74 in front of the hymnal

Second Lesson- Philippians 2:1-11

By humbly taking on human flesh, laying aside the use of his divine powers, suffering and dying to save us, our Lord Jesus gave us both the motivation and the pattern for humble Christian living. Just as Jesus' humiliation ended in exaltation, so we, his humble servants, will be exalted with him in due time.

Gospel Lesson- Matthew 21:28-32

The father in this parable tenderly invites his two sons to work in his vineyard. One accepted but did not work. The other refused but changed his mind ans did work. The religious leaders of Israel talked like the seemingly obedient son in the parable. But they rejected the way of righteousness, which the Father revealed through John the Baptist. Nor were they moved to obey their father when they saw formerly disobedient sons (tax collectors and prostitutes) turn to John's gospel. By grace, these disobedient ones entered God's kingdom through repentance and faith.
