July 20, 2014                                                                  Pentecost 6

Welcome to all worshipers of Jesus! Our fellowship with Christ severs our fellowship with evil. Our peace in Christ will cause division and strife with those who still cling to their fellowship with evil.

Order of Service: Service of Word and Sacrament, page 26 in front of the hymnal

Opening Hymn- This is the Threefold Truth, #406

Prayer of the Day: O God, you have prepared joys beyond understanding for those who love you. Pour into our hearts such love for you that, loving you above all things, we may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
 Amen (sung)

First Lesson- Jeremiah 28:5-9

Many Old Testament prophets correctly foretold God's wrath against disobedient kingdoms. Hannaniah proclaimed the popular message that God was going to restore peace. Jeremiah wished it could be so. But if Hannaniah's prophecy of peace did not materialize, he would be exposed as a false prophet.

Psalm of the Day- Psalm 89, page 98 in front of the hymnal

Second Lesson- Romans 6:1b-11

Through Holy Baptism we participate in Christ's death and resurrection. Sin no longer has dominion over us. We are free to live a godly life here on earth and forever in heaven.

Gospel Lesson- Matthew 10:34-42

When we are at peace with God, we are, of necessity, at war with the world, which has rejected our Savior. Our love for Jesus may sever the closest bonds of human love, or it may cost us our lives. We can be sure that when we suffer crosses with Jesus, we will receive eternal life by the grace of God. Likewise, the most insignificant act of mercy done out of faith in Jesus will receive God's eternal favor.
